Hollywood studios propose AI and data transparency to prevent strike
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Data Transparency in the Blockchain Industry
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) recently unveiled its proposal to address the ongoing strike by actors and writers. This proposal included not only standards for the entertainment industry but also touched on important issues relating to the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) and data transparency.
Under the proposed conditions, generative AI, which refers to AI systems that can create original content, would not be considered a writer. As a result, any material created by generative AI cannot be regarded as literary or intellectually protected. This approach ensures that credit, rights, and compensation are not compromised for human writers. While companies will be allowed to use AI-generated scripts as source material, any writer who contributes to reworking the script will be compensated as if they were the original author. Furthermore, any studio or production company seeking writer support in developing an AI-produced script must disclose the origin of the script.
The initial release of the proposal on August 11 lacked significant information addressing the concerns of the striking parties. However, the latest updates provide more clarity, especially regarding AI-related matters. This demonstrates the industry’s recognition of the importance of addressing the impact of AI on the creative process.
In addition to AI-related matters, the proposal also focuses on data transparency issues. Historically, writers rarely had access to metrics produced by their work. The updated offer aims to provide writers with viewership data, which will be presented in quarterly confidential reports. However, at present, these reports will only include metrics from subscription video on demand (SVOD), excluding advertising or transactional videos. The AMPTP suggests that this increased transparency will enable the Writers Guild of America (WGA) to develop proposals to restructure the current SVOD residual regime in the future.

These developments come after 114 days of strikes and represent Hollywood studios’ latest attempts to incorporate AI technologies into their creative processes. It is crucial to note that earlier this year, the Writers Guild of America had requested a complete ban on AI in the writing room, which was rejected by the studios. The evolving nature of these proposals reflects a growing interest in utilizing AI while preserving the rights and contributions of human writers.
However, it is important to highlight that not all AI integration proposals have been well-received. For instance, there were suggestions that background performers should undergo scanning, receive compensation for the initial day of work, and then grant companies ownership of the scan, image, and likeness. This sparked significant backlash from entertainers within the industry, emphasizing the need for thoughtful consideration of the ethical implications of AI integration.
Nonetheless, the growing interest of big production companies in incorporating AI is evident. For instance, on July 27, Netflix posted job positions specifically related to AI, offering impressive salaries reaching up to $900,000. This not only reflects the industry’s belief in the potential of AI but also underscores the importance of attracting top talent to drive innovation within the field.
In conclusion, the recent proposal by the AMPTP addresses crucial aspects of AI integration and data transparency within the entertainment industry. By ensuring that generative AI does not compromise the rights and compensation of human writers, the industry seeks to strike a balance between technological advancements and creative integrity. The inclusion of data transparency measures also allows writers to access valuable viewership metrics, paving the way for potential restructuring of residual regimes. As the blockchain industry continues to evolve and embrace AI, it is imperative to navigate these developments thoughtfully, mindful of the ethical implications and the crucial contributions of human creativity in this digital age.
