The Blockchain Revolution: Bitcoin Education in El Salvador
Two years after bitcoin (BTC) was established as legal tender in El Salvador, the Ministry of Education has launched a pilot program that aims to bring Bitcoin education to every school in the country by 2024. This exciting initiative, launched on the second anniversary of the Bitcoin Law, is being supported by projects like My First Bitcoin (Mi Primer Bitcoin) and Bitcoin Beach.
The pilot program plans to educate 150 public school teachers about Bitcoin, who will then transfer their knowledge to students across the country. My First Bitcoin is a non-profit organization and education NGO based in El Salvador, with a mission to teach the nation about Bitcoin and transform the country into an exemplar for the world. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as the Ministry of Education in El Salvador pioneers this groundbreaking approach.
Since its inception in 2021, My First Bitcoin has already educated over 25,000 students in-person across the country. Their success story continues with the introduction of the Bitcoin Diploma program. In February last year, My First Bitcoin developed a 10-week Bitcoin Diploma program to make Bitcoin education accessible nationwide. This program, currently in its 5th edition, is open-source and available online, allowing individuals from all over the world to access and learn from it.
The Bitcoin Diploma program was initially taught to the Ministry of Education staff, who then used it as the primary source material to develop curriculum resources for the teachers participating in the pilot program. This demonstrates the scalability and adaptability of the program’s materials. According to John Dennehy, the founder of My First Bitcoin, the Bitcoin Diploma has exceeded expectations, becoming a “wild success.” It has been translated, printed out, and independently taught globally, further spreading knowledge about Bitcoin.

The study materials in the Bitcoin Diploma program share similarities with the popular book “The Bitcoin Standard,” authored by Saifedean Ammous. However, the program’s workbook was not developed in collaboration with Ammous. My First Bitcoin also collaborates with grassroots education projects in over 20 nations, sharing their open-source materials and best practices.
Furthermore, the NGO has initiated discussions with two additional Latin American governments interested in providing Bitcoin education at scale. This signifies the growing interest and recognition of Bitcoin’s importance in the region. Bitcoin Beach, a circular economy project that played a significant role in El Salvador adopting Bitcoin as legal tender, has also supported the education program by providing funding for book printing and training.
The success of the Bitcoin education program in El Salvador can be attributed to key organizations such as The Bitcoin Office, an official government office, and Cubo+, an education program focused on Bitcoin and Lightning developers. These collaborative efforts solidify the commitment of various stakeholders to drive Bitcoin education and adoption forward.
The program in El Salvador serves as a beacon for other countries in exploring the potential of Bitcoin and decentralized technologies. As the pilot program progresses and Bitcoin education becomes more widespread in schools across El Salvador, it is expected that the country will continue to be a leading example of embracing blockchain technology and digital currencies.
In conclusion, El Salvador’s Ministry of Education, alongside initiatives like My First Bitcoin and Bitcoin Beach, aims to provide Bitcoin education to every school in the country. The successful implementation of the Bitcoin Diploma program and collaboration with various organizations highlight the country’s commitment to blockchain technology and digital currency adoption. As education serves as the foundation for the future, embracing Bitcoin in the education system paves the way for a new generation of blockchain experts and enthusiasts. El Salvador’s progress in this field sets a precedent for other nations to follow, ultimately shaping the future of the blockchain industry worldwide.
