Cybersecurity firm warns 100K ChatGPT logins leaked on dark web.

According to a Singaporean cybersecurity firm, over 100,000 login credentials to the popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT have been leaked and traded on the dark web in the past year.

Group-IB released a blog post on June 20th, stating that just over 101,000 devices containing compromised logins for OpenAI’s flagship bot were traded on dark web marketplaces between June 2022 and May 2023.

Dmitry Shestakov, Group-IB’s threat intelligence head, stated that the figure represents “the number of logs from stealer-infected devices that Group-IB analyzed.” He also added that “every log contained at least one combination of login credential and password for ChatGPT.”

In May of this year, nearly 27,000 ChatGPT-related credentials were made available on online black markets, making the Asia-Pacific region the highest concentration of ChatGPT credentials being offered for sale.

Over the past year, the Asia-Pacific region had the highest amount of compromised logins for sale, making up approximately 40% of the nearly 100,000 figure. Indian-based credentials had the highest number of logins leaked online at over 12,500, with the United States coming in sixth at nearly 3,000. France was seventh overall and took the lead for Europe.

ChatGPT accounts can be created directly through OpenAI or using Google, Microsoft, or Apple accounts to login and use the service.

Group-IB warned that confidential information about companies could be exposed by unauthorized users as user queries and chat history are stored by default. It noted that an uptick in employees using ChatGPT for work has been observed.

The firm also stated that the press release was written with the assistance of ChatGPT.
