Apple to remove Damus app with Bitcoin tip feature that uses Nostr.

The decentralized social media app called Damus may be removed from the Apple app store due to its Bitcoin tipping feature.

On June 13, the creators of Damus received a warning letter from Apple stating that the app will be taken down from the platform because of the “Zaps” feature, which allows users to tip each other in Bitcoin. The Bitcoin tipping feature was made possible through the integration of the Lighting Network widget.

The Apple team claimed that the Zaps feature violates their policy which prohibits any other form of tipping feature other than in-app purchases. They stated that even though the tipping feature may be optional, “if they are connected to or associated with receiving digital content, they must use in-app purchase in accordance with guideline 3.1.1.”

The Damus team clarified that their app doesn’t sell any digital goods or provide features for selling digital goods. It only has tip buttons for facilitating peer-to-peer transactions.

Bitcoin tipping has become popular on social media platforms, and even Twitter and Reddit have enabled the same feature. The Apple app store has also previously approved a Bird game app with Bitcoin tipping in 2015.

Many crypto enthusiasts have questioned why tips on Twitter are allowed while the same feature on Damus violates Apple’s policies. Others have accused Apple of protecting the interests of Silicon Valley over decentralization.

Some have also pointed out that the reservation made by Apple against its policies was wrongly placed as Damus is not selling any digital content and requested the tech giant to rectify their mistake.
