Anichess, a decentralized chess game by Animoca Brands, raised $1.5M.

Anichess, a subsidiary company of Animoca Brands, a giant in the blockchain gaming industry, has successfully raised $1.5 million in seed funding to create a decentralized chess game. The funding came from GameFi Ventures, The Operating Group, Koda Capital, Bing Ventures, 708 Capital, and Asymmetry Capital. This investment will be used to expand the team and further develop the game before its alpha launch in the first quarter of 2024.

Anichess is a free-to-play community-driven game created in partnership with Chess.com-owned Play Magnus Group (PMG) and its Champions Chess Tour. It is advertised as having “new strategic layers powered by magical spells,” combining the traditional rules of chess with a spell mechanic that includes various offensive, defensive, and counter tactics. The game will also feature esports-like challenges.

Chess.com, which acquired PMG in December, has over 100 million registered users.

Grant Lee, Chief Strategy Officer of Chess.com, stated in a press release, “We are excited to partner with Animoca Brands to provide some of the top players and influencers in our ecosystem with a fun and different chess experience as part of our overall mission to grow the game by presenting chess in new ways to different audiences.”
